PLP’s Martha Karua declares 2027 presidential bid

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has officially announced her intention to vie for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

PLP leader Martha Karua

Karua made the declaration on Friday during PLP’s National Delegation Conference (NDC), held at the Ufungamano House in Nairobi.

She was accompanied by other opposition leaders including DCP’s Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugine Wamalwa among others.

The PLP leader stated that her decision was not motivated by personal ambitions, but desire to serve the public and restore Kenyans’ trust in public institutions.

“Today, before you, I declare my candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the next General Election under the banner of the People’s Liberation Party and within a united opposition,” Karua announced.

She added “We make this declaration not out of mere ambition for office, but out of devotion to service.”

Karua however clarified that her intention is to serve for only one term and leave the mantle for the next team. She also asserted that her main objective if elected president would be to lay the foundation for the country’s prosperous future.

“I believe that in five years it is possible to lay a foundation. Nobody will ever finish the job of making Kenya prosperous. You lay a foundation and you wait for the next team to further it. So, I want to open by saying: I’ll be seeking one term,” she said.

She called on Kenyans to rally behind the United Opposition in its mission to unite the country and intensify efforts aimed at unseating the current administration.

Her announcement comes just days after DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua also declared his bid for the presidency.

The opposition leaders have always maintained that they will eventually settle on a single candidate to fly the coalition’s flag in the 2027 general elections.
