NTSA Suspends Licences of 62 Drivers from Renowned Matatu Saccos Over Safety Breaches

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended driving licenses of 62 Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers after multiple safety breaches were detected during compliance assessment.

In a statement issued on December 9, NTSA noted that the identified drivers drawn from six renowned matatu saccos, will be required to undergo retesting before they are cleared to return on the roads.

Tahmeed Express Limited recorded the highest number of suspensions at 23 drivers, followed by Latema Travellers Bus and Safari Company Limited with 13.

Meru Nissan Operators had their 10 drivers suspended, Moline Prestige Services Shuttle Limited had six, MTrans Sacco Limited had seven while three were from Enabled Mashariki Investment Limited.

NTSA reiterated that the move is aimed at ensuring that all PSV operators adhere to road safety regulations, and that they demonstrate adequate qualifications to operate on the roads.

The authority also directed the affected saccos to organize road safety awareness training for all their drivers and present the selected vehicles for inspection.

“Besides re-testing the identified drivers, the affected operators must organise road safety awareness training for all their drivers and present selected vehicles for inspection. The driver re-testing exercise is part of the wider proactive efforts by the Authority aimed at ensuring every driver possesses the requisite skills and competencies to safely operate on our roads,” NTSA said in a statement

NTSA further asserted that such enforcement will continue as part of their broader efforts to reduce road accidents and safeguard passengers especially during the festive season.

“Several operators are currently under scrutiny to ensure their drivers and vehicles fully comply with established safety regulations.”

Weeks ago, NTSA together with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the National Police Service (NPS), launched a coordinated crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles across the country.

The operation which began in late November 2025, is a direct response to the alarming increase in road accidents especially during the festive season.
