Nairobi County Waives Property Repair Levies for 30 Days After Floods

Nairobi City County Government has announced a one-month waivers on repairs and maintenance works levies and approvals for residents whose homes and businesses were damaged by the recent floods.

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Acting County Secretary and Head of Public Service Godfrey Akumali, said property owners undertaking repair and restoration works will temporarily be exempted from paying levies.

The move will enable property owners begin repairs immediately after widespread damages caused by heavy rains on March 6, 2026.

“Pursuant to the powers vested in the Office of the Governor, and in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances occasioned by the recent heavy rains and flooding across Nairobi City County, the County Government hereby grants a one-month waiver on all levies and approvals ordinarily required for residents to undertake repair and maintenance works on their properties,” stated the notice.

Nairobi county government stated that the directive aims to eliminate bureaucratic barriers that may delay urgent repair works while also easing the burden on affected residents. Acting County Secretary Akumali said the decision was issued under the authority of the Governor.

“The waiver is intended to expedite the restoration of homes, businesses and public facilities affected by flood damage, safeguard the health and safety of residents, and support community resilience during this challenging period,” the notice said.

The county government encouraged residents to take advantage of the waiver period to restore damaged structures, while assuring that technical guidance and oversight will still be provided to ensure repairs meet safety standards.

March 6 rains triggered flooding in most parts of the city, leaving homes destroyed, infrastructure damaged and families displaced.

The latest police report confirmed that the countrywide death toll has risen to 49, with Nairobi recording the highest number at 29.
