Ministry of Interior Issues Travel Advisory As Schools Reopen For First Term

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a nationwide safety alert to parents and all members of the public to remain vigilant as schools reopen, ensuring learners travel safely back to their respective schools for first term.

In a public notice issued on Monday, January 5, 2026, the ministry emphasized on the shared responsibility of parents, guardians, students and drivers in ensuring that the children are safeguarded during the back-to-school period.

The Ministry further called on parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s safety, urging them to stay aware of their whereabouts and ensure they are always accounted for.

Students, on the other hand have been encouraged to schedule their journeys early enough to avoid late night travel whenever possible.

Additionally, learners have also been urged to use only recognized public transport and registered SACCOs, travel in groups where possible, look out for one another, and steer clear of bad company, drugs, and any criminal activity while on their journey back to school.

The ministry went further to remind all drivers, particularly those ferrying students to prioritise safety by observing traffic rules, maintaining their vehicles in roadworthy condition and exercising caution to ensure passengers and other road users are protected.

According to the ministry, the advisory serves as part of the government’s broader efforts to promote public safety and help in reducing road accidents and insecurity during peak travel seasons.

The advisory comes hours after an early morning crash which took place along the Nairobi – Nakuru highway on Monday morning. The crash claimed the lives of at least 9 people while others were left with serious injuries.

The accident occurred in Karai area in Naivasha at around 2 am after Greenline bus had a head-on collision with a Nanyuki Cabs shuttle. The crash led to a mild traffic on the highway, with motorists rushing to offer help before the police and emergency responders arrived at the scene.

The Interior and National Administration Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all learners as schools reopen across the country.
