Leaders Mourn, Demand Swift Justice for Slain MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Kasipul MP Charles Ongondo Were was shot dead by unknown assailants at City Mortuary round about on April 30, 2025.

While still trying to come to terms with the death of Kasipul legislator Charles Ong’ondo Were, Kenyan leaders have called for investigations into the shooting incident that claimed the lawmaker’s life.

Hon. Ong’ondo Were was shot and killed by unknown gunmen along Ngong Road on Wednesday night.

While speaking at Nairobi Hospital, where the slain MP had been rushed before being declared dead, Interior PS Raymond Omollo revealed that Were had left Parliament around 7 p.m. He added that the killer might have trailed his car from town.

PS Omollo assured the public that investigations would be expedited to uncover what took place.

“The MP left Parliament a few minutes past 7, and the actual shooting happened at around 7:30 on Ngong Road by a passenger on a motorcycle. We are yet to establish the exact identity of the person. The driver and the bodyguard brought the late MP to Nairobi Hospital. It appears that this assailant was trailing the car from town,” Omollo said.

“This is a very tragic event that has happened this evening. Investigations are ongoing to establish what happened. I want to convey condolences from the President — I spoke to him while I was coming here. We want to assure the public that we will have an expedited investigation process so that we get to the bottom of what took place.”

President William Ruto conveyed his message of condolence and urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and arrest the suspects.

“May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul strength to bear the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account,” Ruto said.

ODM party leader Raila Odinga mourned Hon. Were as a brave leader who stood for what was right and dedicated his service to the people.

“We have lost a gallant son of the soil! Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were is no more — mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening,” Raila wrote on his socials.

Even as calls for investigations continue to mount, the National Police Service has issued a statement saying it was a targeted and premeditated incident. The law enforcement body urged anyone who might have witnessed the shooting to contact the nearest police station.

“The National Police Service condemns this heinous and senseless crime and will spare no effort in investigating the matter. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact the nearest police station, a law enforcer, or call our toll-free numbers,” NPS said in a statement.
