Miguna made the announcement during an interview on TV47 on Wednesday night.

He affirmed that decision is anchored on what he termed as transformative vision, further affirming that his leadership would prioritize the interests of the ordinary Kenyans, not just a select elite.

“I am going to vie as President of the Republic of Kenya. I’m going to do it on a transformative vision,” Miguna said.

“A vision that identifies the interests of the Republic of Kenya and the people of Kenya as the core and foundation of moving the country forward,” he added.

The outspoken lawyer emphasized that his agenda will align with socialism, not capitalism, arguing that Kenya needs a system that prioritize equal distribution of resources, universal access to basic needs and protection of the working force from exploitation.

“It is a vision built on integrity and built on socialism, not capitalism,” Miguna stated.

Miguna’s declaration to vie for the presidency places him among a growing list of contenders seeking to challenge and unseat President Ruto in the 2027 general election.

The leaders eyeing the top seat include United Opposition leaders, Fred Matiang’i, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Eugine Wamalwa. They had previously vowed to unite behind a single candidate to carry the opposition’s flag in the 2027 race.

Other notable figures are Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Human Right activist Boniface Mwangi and Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah.

On their part, the ODM Party has not yet decided whether to field a candidate or form a coalition with William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party.

Speaking during his New Year’s address on December 31, 2025, ODM leader Oburu Oginga stated that they will make a formal decision before the end of 2026.

“Of course, if we are going it alone, I want to make it absolutely clear that our constitution already has a presidential candidate. That presidential candidate is none other than the party leader,” Oburu said.

“Things must be worked out before 2027. Going into the New Year, before the end of the New Year, we shall have decided and made clear all the necessary arrangements.”
