In a statement on Monday, March 9, 2026, KWS advised visitors, tour operators and airlines operating flights to Amboseli National Park to avoid the Airstrip saying it is currently flooded making it unsafe for landings and takeoffs.

“The Kenya Wildlife Service wishes to notify all visitors, tour operators and airlines operating flights to Amboseli National Park that the Main Amboseli Airstrip is currently flooded due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the area,” read the notice.

KWS reiterated that operations at the Main Amboseli Airstrip will remain suspended until conditions improve and the airstrip is deemed safe.

The service directed airlines and pilots to use the nearby Tawi Airstrip, located about 5 km from Kimana Gate, for continued access to the National Park.

“In the meantime, all airlines and pilots are advised to use the nearby Tawi Airstrip as the alternative landing Airstrip. The airstrip is conveniently located approximately 5 Kilometers from Kimana Gate, providing continued access to the park for visitors,” KWS stated.

KWS further said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide timely updates regarding the status of the airstrip and prevailing weather conditions.

It also encouraged visitors and operators to remain in contact with KWS for the latest updates. The public were also advised to use its toll-free number 0800 597 000 in case of emergencies or for further information.
