Kenya Remits KSh3.9B to CAF, Safeguarding AFCON 2027 Hosting

Kenya has finally remitted KSh3.9 billion (approximately $30 million) as a hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football, alleviating fears that the country could lose its hosting rights for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a Press Release issued on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the government has paid the hosting fee, fulfilling its financial and institutional obligation to CAF.

Kenyans can now breathe a sigh of relief, as the payment ensures that the country will co-host the continental tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

“I am pleased to announce that the Government of Kenya has fully met its financial and institutional obligations to CAF as we steadily advance towards co-hosting the 2027 AFCON,” CS Mvurya announced.

“In fulfilment of our commitments, the government has remitted a $30 million hosting fee to CAF, reaffirming Kenya’s credibility, readiness, and unwavering commitment to delivering a successful continental tournament,” Mvurya added.

Mvurya further stated that the government has restructured the Multi-Agency Local Organizing Committee, incorporating key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to strengthen capacity and accelerate the preparations needed to host a tournament of AFCON’s scale.

The Sports Cabinet Secretary also outlined plans to fast-track the implementation of critical infrastructure and operational requirements, including the construction and upgrading of match venues and training facilities, improvements to transport and logistics systems, and enhancements to safety, security, and broadcast standards.

“This is a routine but critical process in the hosting cycle, and Kenya is addressing each recommendation with precision, urgency, and accountability,” Mvurya noted.

He revealed that officials from the co-hosting countries will meet next month to deliberate on the establishment of a harmonized framework to support the implementation of visa facilitation mechanisms to enable ease of movements for teams, officials, fans and stakeholders across the borders.
