Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rains Across Multiple Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has once again issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the country over the next seven days.

According to KMD, the forecast covered an extension between Tuesday, March 17, and Monday, March 23, indicating at least six regions to experience significant rainfall, with intensity expected to increase as the week progresses.

In a statement on Tuesday, KMD announced that Highland areas, East region and West region of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the broader Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Coastal region to receive a high amount of rains.

The forecast signals a continuation of the long rain season pattern, which typically intensifies around mid-March in many parts of the country.

Residents in the affected regions have been advised to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas where heavy downpours could disrupt transport and livelihoods.

“Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the south-eastern Lowlands, and the Coast region of Kenya with increased intensity from Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall events are also likely to occur over parts of these same regions,” KMD said in its advisory.

This comes at a time when many counties continue to prepare for seasonal rains that often bring both relief and challenges.

While the rainfall is expected to support agricultural activities, particularly in food-producing regions, it may also lead to flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage if the intensity becomes extreme.

Meanwhile, a contrasting weather pattern is expected in the north-eastern and north-western parts of the country, where sunny and dry conditions are likely to prevail for most of the week.

However, KMD noted that occasional rainfall may still be experienced in some areas despite the generally dry outlook.

Temperatures are also expected to vary significantly across the country. Daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are projected in several regions, including the Coast, north-eastern, and north-western Kenya, signalling continued heat stress in these areas.

KMD has urged the public, as well as county governments and relevant agencies, to stay updated with daily forecasts and advisories to mitigate potential risks associated with the changing weather conditions.
