Court of Appeal judge Justice Katwa Kigen, and former President William Ruto’s lawyer, is among the five shortlisted for the vacant Supreme Court judge position.

The Judicial Service Commission announced on Friday, March 27, that it had received six applications by the February 17, 2026, following an advertisement on January 28, 2026 and shortlisted five of the applicants, including Katwa Kigen.
The other four shortlisted candidates are Justice Joseph Kiplagat Sergon , High Court Judge , Justice Warsame Abdulahi Mohammed, Court of Appeal Judge Justice Francis Kipruto Tuiyott, High Court Judge, Anne Waceke Kiratu Makori, IPOA Chairperson.
After reviewing their submissions, the JSC stated that the candidates met the required standards to serve at the country’s highest court, and will now proceed to the interview stage.
Interviews will be held on April 28 and 29, 2026, after which the JSC will submit one name to the President for nomination and later approval by the National Assembly .
The public has been invited to share any information they may have about the shortlisted candidates, which will be handled confidentially.
“Members of the public are invited to avail in writing any information of interest in respect to any of the shortlisted candidates using the contacts: 020 2739180 or recruitment@jsc.go.ke,” JSC announced.
“Take note that the Commission may interview any member of the Public who has submitted information on any of the shortlisted candidates, and such information shall be kept confidential,” the Commission added.
The position at the Supreme Court was declared vacant following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, who passed away on December 17 last year after a long battle with illness.
