The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered the immediate suspension of several officers at Central Police Station following the death of Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody.

IG Kanja confirmed that the move would pave the way for expeditious investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
According to the Inspector General, the officers to be interdicted include the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Duty Officer on duty during the night in question, the Cell Sentry on duty at the time, and all officers who were on duty at the Report Office that night.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to inform the public that, following the tragic death of Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, and to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Inspector General of the National Police Service has ordered the interdiction of the following officers with immediate effect,” the IG said in a statement.

“The Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Central Police Station; the Duty Officer on duty during the night in question; the Cell Sentry on duty at the time; all officers who were on duty at the Report Office that night; and any other officer found to have been on duty or otherwise involved during the incident.”
On Sunday, the police had issued a contradictory statement, denying any involvement in the death of Albert Ojwang’. They claimed that Ojwang’ succumbed after hitting his head against the cell walls — a report that has since been dismissed by the influencer’s family.
Albert Ojwang’, a Kenyan social media influencer and teacher, was arrested in Homa Bay County on Saturday for allegedly posting derogatory statements about a senior police officer. He was then transported to Central Police Station in Nairobi and later found dead the following day.
