IEBC decries low turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appealed to Kenyan youth who have recently attained voting age to visit the nearest constituency office and register as voters.

In a statement issued on Friday October 10, IEBC noted that it has recorded a minimal turnout since the process kicked off two weeks ago.

While acknowledging Kenyans who have already registered, The commission revealed that as of Wednesday October 8, the total number of new registrations stood at 20,754, with 3,207 transfers and 61 updates.

IEBC noted that participation in the exercise is significant in strengthening the foundation of free, fair and credible elections.

“The Commission appreciates the many Kenyans who have already registered, updated their details, or transferred their voter records. Your participation is vital in strengthening the foundation of free, fair, and credible elections,” IEBC noted

Erastus Ethekon led commission further expressed its disappointment with the eligible youth over their reluctance to turn out and participate in the exercise.

“While we commend this progress, turnout among the targeted youth remains lower than expected. With a national target of 6.3 million new voters, the Commission urges all eligible Kenyans, particularly the youth, to take this opportunity to register and make their voices count in the 2027 General Election,” IEBC wrote.

According to IEBC data, Nairobi leads with
4,804 new voters, Mombasa comes second with 1,379, followed by Kiambu with 1,203, Machakos with 923 and Nakuru with 840.

Counties recording fair turnout include Kisii with 728, Kilifi with 673, Kitui with 666 and Kakamega with 608 new voters.

Lamu, Nyamira, Tana River and Samburu counties witnessed low numbers with 36, 18, 42 and 67 respectively.
