Ex-Chief Justice David Maraga has called for the arrest of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat following the gruesome murder of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody.

Maraga, who was speaking after presenting a petition at the police headquarters in Nairobi, urged the agencies responsible to arrest everyone implicated in the unfortunate killing.
He also noted that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the entire police leadership lied under oath in the events that led to Ojwang’s death. Maraga asserted that the lies were a cover-up of the murder, perpetrated by those charged with maintaining law and order.
The former Chief Justice singled out Lagat for being directly or indirectly involved in the murder of the late Ojwang’.
“There is prima facie evidence that Mr. Eliud Lagat — directly or indirectly, by himself or through his accomplices — is implicated in the illegal arrest, torture, strangulation, and eventual murder of the late Albert Ojwang’. Yet, Mr. Lagat still remains in office. It is now time to immediately arrest and institute prosecutions against Mr. Lagat,” Maraga stated.
Maraga also accused President William Ruto of failing to heed cries for justice and an end to extra-judicial killings that have taken center stage since the beginning of the Gen Z revolt in mid-2024.
“President Ruto and the security sector leadership have failed to take any action to bring to book all those security officers involved in the abduction, torture, and killings of so many young Kenyans since Ruto took office, and particularly in 2024 and 2025. Again, this shows the level of callousness and disregard Ruto and his leadership have for the life and suffering of Kenyans,” Maraga added.
He warned of a possible recurrence of the protests if stringent actions are not taken to curb police killings.
