A Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examiner has passed away while marking papers at Machakos Girls High School.

The unfortunate incident was confirmed by Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere.
According to Dr. Njengere, the examiner, identified as Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku, died on Monday November 24. He was the team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper.
“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our examiners for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away this morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he was a team leader in the Creative Arts and Sports paper,” Dr. Njengere announced through a statement.
He added that the deceased had been actively and diligently performing his duties as a team leader since the KJSEA marking exercise began on 7th November 2025.
KNEC also revealed that the late Mr. Mutuku was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County. He served as examiner with KNEC of the now defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones and fellow examiners,” said Mr. Njengere.
The Ministry of Education had earlier announced that the results of KJSEA for grade 9 learners will be released on December 11, 2025.
Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Prof. Julius Bitok confirmed that senior school placements will commence shortly after the release, with all the 1.1 million students expected to join on January 12, 2026.
