Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has urged public university lecturers to end strike and resume work.

Speaking in Mombasa on Tuesday during the opening of the conference on Status of Pre-Service Teachers Training and Teachers Employment in the country, CS Ogamba warned the striking lecturers of serious consequences should they fail to comply with court orders.

Ogamba also explained that the government has released Ksh2.5 billion for phase 2 of the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreements.

“Court orders must be obeyed. Otherwise, you will be in contempt, which may necessitate disciplinary action. We are asking the lecturers to get back to work,” Ogamba stated.

He also affirmed to the lecturers that remaining grievances would be discussed after they resume teaching.

“We have done a lot in the sector and we’ve agreed that all grievances can be discussed without us going on strike which affects our learners,” he said.

On Wednesday September 17, the lecturers from across the country under the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), downed tools demanding the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

UASU had issued a notice on September 10 that they would paralyze learning in all public institutions of higher learning if the government failed to address their grievances.
