Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has finally stepped aside to allow investigations into the murder of blogger Albert Ojwang’.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, Lagat said his decision was based on “good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities.” He added that stepping down was also in response to the ongoing investigations into the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang’.
“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities as the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, and in view of the ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident of the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang’, I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General — Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” Lagat stated.
He further added that the functions of his office would be performed by his deputy until the probe is concluded.
“The functions of the office will henceforth be performed by my deputy until the completion of the investigations.”
The DIG also pledged to offer his support to the investigative bodies and extended condolences to Ojwang’s family.
“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident. I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang’ for their great loss,” he stated.
Prior to Lagat’s statement, pressure had continued to mount, with a majority of Kenyans demanding his arrest and prosecution. Lagat’s name was dragged into Albert’s murder case after it was revealed that he was the main complainant.
Ojwang’ was arrested for allegedly posting content on social media that purportedly aimed to tarnish Lagat’s reputation. The post, uploaded on the X platform, claimed that the DIG was involved in corrupt activities within the National Police Service.
The blogger’s death at the hands of the police has sparked outrage among Kenyans, with youths taking to the streets last week to demand swift and thorough investigations and the prosecution of those involved in the heinous act.
