Detectives Probe Shocking Nyandarua Murder as Victim’s Son Emerges as Prime Suspect

Detectives have stepped up investigations into the gruesome murder of 60-year-old Millicent Wahura Mwangi in Nyandarua County. The tragic incident has stunned residents after her second-born son was arrested as the prime suspect in the killing.

Police officers at Olkalou Police Station received a report that Mwangi had gone missing on the 11th of November 2025, after failing to return home in Mwireri village, Olkalou, Nyandarua Central Sub-County.

What initially appeared to be a missing person case soon took a grim twist after preliminary findings pointed to foul play.

Three days later, on November 14, 2025, passersby in Rumathi village made a discovery along the Malewa-Kipipiri road, about 37 kilometers from Olkalou. A female torso stuffed in a sack and abandoned by the roadside was found clad in a whitish blouse with blue and black stripes.

Responding swiftly, officers from Kipipiri police station rushed to the scene, documented the findings and mounted a search for the missing body parts, but the effort bore no fruit.

The body was moved to JM Kariuki Memorial Funeral Home for preservation, identification and autopsy.

Detectives later notified the family about the discovery, who on visiting the facility, positively identified the torso as that of Millicent Wahura Mwangi, confirming fears that she had been murdered.

Upon receiving the confirmation, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Investigations Unit took over the probe, working jointly with Nyandarua Central Sub-County detectives. A manhunt was launched for the suspect behind the killing.

Through forensic intelligence and sustained investigations, investigators trailed down and arrested Benson Maina Mwangi, the prime suspect who is also the deceased’s second-born son, on November 20, 2025, at his hideout in Kamulu.

He was processed and arraigned before Olkalou law Courts on November 24, 2025, where detectives secured 21-day custodial orders to allow further investigations. He remains in custody pending mention on January 19, 2026.

On December 23, homicide detectives and forensic experts carried out a scene re-enactment exercise. Guided by the suspect, the team proceeded to River Malewa, where an underwater search led to the recovery of crucial exhibits, including a machete, believed to be the murder weapon, a bedsheet, blanket, and other items the suspect allegedly disposed off after the killing.

Investigations are still underway as detectives work towards piecing together the final moments of Mwangi’s life, compiling the evidence to ensure justice is served.
