Sarah Elisabeth Mullaly has marked yet another milestone in the Anglican Church as the first woman to lead the institution as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1,400 years.

The 63-year-old was formally installed in a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral, surrounded by dignitaries including the British Prime Minister and members of the royal family.

The historic event marks a significant shift in the Church of England’s history, with Mullally’s appointment symbolizing progress towards greater inclusivity and diversity.

Her path to this role is a testament to her dedication and service, having previously served as a nurse and midwife before becoming a priest.

In her inaugural sermon, Mullally emphasized unity and trust.

“We walk with God trusting that God walks with us. Trusting that in all that we face, in the sorrow and the challenges as much as in the joy and the delight we do not walk alone,”she sermoned.

As the spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion, Mullally faces the task of navigating the Church’s complex landscape and healing divisions.
