CS Chirchir issues an update regarding Mwihoko Aircraft crash

The Ministry of Roads and transport has availed a preliminary accident report on African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) accident at Mwihoko, Ruiru Sub-County, Kiambu County.

In a statement signed by Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, the Ministry confirmed that the AMREF Flying Doctors Aircraft took off from Wilson Airport on Thursday 7, August 2025 at 2:14PM, on a medical evacuation flight to Egal International Airport in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Unfortunately, at about 2:17 local time, the light aircraft went down killing all four occupants on board. The Ministry added that two people on the ground also perished in the tragic accident while two others suffered serious injuries.

According to the preliminary report, “the aircraft was destroyed by impact forces and ensuing fire.”

However, in a bid to identify the probable cause of the accident and as stated in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Annex 13, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) deployed a team of investigators to the crash site to conduct initial investigations and witness interviews. The report also indicated that the investigative body notified the manufacturer of the aircraft to aid with the probe.

For a proper, effective and finalization of the investigation, the Ministry asserted that AAID dispatched to the United State of America’s National Transportation Safety Board, the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder as found at the crash site, with analysis exercise to be conducted in the last week of September and the first week of October 2025.
