The Council of Governors (CoG) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Governor of Samburu County, Lelelit Lati, outside Parliament Buildings on Wednesday April 1, 2026, describing the incident as “shocking and unacceptable”.

In a statement issued on 2nd April 2026, CoG chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi condemned a group of Senators, from the County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), for attempting to compel governor Lelelit to appear before the Senate committee.
Abdullahi described the conduct as an act of “hooliganism” that undermines the Office of the Governor and is contrary to the constitution and the rule of law.
“This act of hooliganism not only demeans the dignity of the Office of the Governor as a Head of County Government, but also strikes at the very heart of constitutionalism, institutional decorum, and the rule of law,” Abdullahi said.
He also said the incident was a blatant violation of the rights and protections guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya, which upholds human dignity, respect, and the peaceful conduct of public affairs as non-negotiable national values.
The CoG Chair also reminded State actors that leadership must at all times be guided by accountability, restraint, and fidelity to human rights and constitutional order. He called for immediate action to ensure justice is served, institutional integrity is protected, and public confidence in our democratic processes is upheld.
Tensions flared at the Parliament buildings on Wednesday afternoon after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ordered the immediate arrest and escort of Governor Lati Lelelit to the Parliament Police Station.
The Governor had visited Parliament seeking an audience with Senate leadership, despite an existing arrest warrant for failing to honor previous Senate summons.
