Two people, a chief and a primary school teacher were killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack in Hulugho town, Garissa County. The incident has raised public concerns over insecurity along the Kenya-Somali border.

According to police and local reports, the two victims were ambushed and shot dead in their homes on Sunday, January 25.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident noting that a multi-agency security team has officially launched an operation to have the attackers tracked down.
“The National Police Service (NPS) is aware of and is actively responding to a security incident that occurred earlier today, Monday, 26th January 2026, in the Hulugho area of Garissa County, in which a chief and a teacher were killed”, the statement read.
Edo Udgoon Siyad, Garissa Member of Parliament described the death of the two as a profound loss not only to their families but also to the entire Garissa community.
“I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment”, said Siyad. “We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace”, she added.
Police officers have said the area has since been secured, and patrols have been intensified in Hulugho and surrounding regions as investigations continue.
Members of the public were further urged to remain calm, vigilant and work in cooperation with security agencies by sharing any information that could be of help in the ongoing operations.
The attack comes amid heightened security concerns along the porous Kenya-Somalia border, where suspected militants have repeatedly attempted to infiltrate the country.
In recent months, security forces have repelled several incursions, including a deadly incident in Kulan near Dadaab where two border police officers were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in was blown up by an improvised explosive device.
The NPS, under the leadership of the Inspector General, reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents and the whole country at large that those responsible for the Hulugho attack will be arrested and brought to justice.
