Cameroon’s President Paul Biya names son Franck Emmanuel Biya Vice President

Cameroon’s long-serving leader, Paul Biya, has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, to several of the country’s most powerful positions in a move that is already drawing attention from political observers.

In a Presidential decree issued on April 4, 2026, from the capital Yaoundé, Franck Biya was named Vice President, Head of the Armed Forces, and Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence.

“Mr Franck Emmanuel Biya is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Cameroon,” read the statement.

According to the presidency, the appointments were made in line with constitutional provisions and existing defence laws, citing service requirements as the main reason for the decision.

The decree also indicated that the changes would be processed under an expedited procedure and formally published in the country’s Official Gazette.

The development signals a major shift in Cameroon’s governance structure, effectively placing significant executive and military authority in the hands of the President’s son.

Analysts say the move could heighten concerns about the concentration of power and the independence of state institutions.

President Biya, who has been in power since 1982 after succeeding Ahmadou Ahidjo, remains one of the world’s longest-serving leaders.

Now in his early nineties, his latest decision comes at a time of increased political tension following a disputed election and rising public dissatisfaction.

Observers note that the appointments may further intensify debate over governance and succession in the Central African nation.
