Central Organization of Trade Unions – Kenya (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has thrown his weight behind the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF), saying that the country needs it to avert the surge in road accidents.

Through a social media post on Tuesday December 16, 2025, Atwoli urged Kenyans to embrace the newly approved Fund since it is key to helping the country avoid the current increase in road accidents.
The COTU boss maintained that NIF will enable Kenya develop proper infrastructure, capable of preventing road tragedies.
“Kenya urgently needs the National Infrastructure Fund to prevent tragedies that could have been prevented with proper infrastructure investment,” Atwoli said.
He however dismissed critics of the national infrastructure fund, who he claims are planning to challenge it in court. He added that the fund is essential in addressing traffic snarl up often experienced from Nairobi to Western Kenya.
“As we call upon Kenyans to embrace the National Infrastructure Fund to address avoidable accidents, it is unfortunate that some stupid and primitive individuals are opposed to the initiative and are even planning to challenge it in court,” he stated.
Atwoli’s remarks come barely a day after the Cabinet on Monday December 15, approved the establishment of Ksh5 Trillion National Infrastructure Fund and the Sovereign Fund, aimed at transforming the country into a first-world economy.
The two funds are set to bolster Kenya’s development by enhancing food security, upgrading transport system and expanding energy access to support industrial growth and digital economy.
NIF will oversee the construction of major roads including the dualling of the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road, the construction of a 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi to Thika town in Kiambu County among others.
