The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a seven-week Explosive Incident Countermeasures Course at the Border Police College in Kanyonyo, reinforcing Kenya’s efforts to strengthen preparedness and response to explosive-related threats.

The training programme, officially inaugurated on Monday July 6, brings together officers from the Bomb Disposal Unit and the Administration Police Special Operations Group (SOG). Upon successful completion of the course, participants will qualify as Basic Bomb Technicians.
Speaking during the launch on behalf of DCI Director Mohamed Amin, Director of Personnel Ms. Rosemary Kuraru expressed gratitude to the Government of the United States of America, through the Anti-Terrorism Assistance (ATA) Programme, for sponsoring the initiative.
She underscored the importance of the longstanding partnership in enhancing Kenya’s specialised counter-terrorism and explosives response capabilities.
In his message, the Director DCI, Mr. Mohamed Amin noted that the evolving global threat posed by explosive devices calls for continuous investment in specialised training, operational readiness and professional excellence.
He said the course demonstrates the DCI’s commitment to equipping officers with the technical expertise and practical skills needed to address emerging security challenges effectively.
Throughout the intensive programme, participants will receive comprehensive instruction in the fundamentals of explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), military ordnance, render-safe procedures, transportation and storage of explosives, as well as other critical operational competencies essential for modern bomb disposal operations.
Ms. Kuraru challenged the participants to approach the training with discipline, humility and determination, emphasising that the knowledge and skills acquired could prove vital in protecting innocent lives, safeguarding fellow officers and preventing devastating attacks.
She also commended the leadership and staff of the Border Police College alongside ATA Programme facilitators for their dedication to developing highly skilled personnel capable of responding to increasingly complex security threats.
The launch of the course marks another milestone in the DCI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security through continuous professional development, specialised training and strategic international partnerships.
