Ruto Meets OpenAI Chief Sam Altman to Discuss AI Collaboration

President William Ruto has revealed that Kenya is exploring a partnership with OpenAI aimed at expanding artificial intelligence education and strengthening the country’s position as a regional technology hub.

In a statement issued after a meeting with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, Ruto said the discussions focused on opportunities to deepen collaboration in AI and digital transformation.

“On the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, I held discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on opportunities to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital transformation,” the President said.

According to Ruto, one of the key areas under discussion is the possibility of establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa.

“We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading hub for AI talent and innovation,” he said.

The proposed initiative would seek to broaden access to AI education, equip learners with digital skills and support the development of a workforce capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

Ruto said Kenya is keen to leverage emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people and accelerate innovation across the continent.

“I underscored the importance of harnessing emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people, drive innovation and ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy,” he stated.

The talks come as Kenya continues to position itself as a leading technology destination in Africa, with increased investment in digital infrastructure, innovation and skills development.

If implemented, the proposed partnership could enhance Kenya’s role in the global AI ecosystem while opening new opportunities for education, research and technological innovation across Eastern Africa.
