Security agencies have recorded another milestone in the ongoing disarmament campaign in Turkana County after 26 illegal firearms were voluntarily surrendered during an operation in Katilu, signaling growing community cooperation in efforts to restore peace in the region.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the weapons handed over included 21 AK-47 rifles, two M16 rifles, two MK4 firearms, and one G3 rifle.
The surrender forms part of the government’s sustained security operations aimed at removing illicit weapons from circulation in banditry-prone areas.
NPS noted that the peaceful disarmament exercise remains a critical pillar in enhancing security and stability across northern Kenya, where illegal firearms have historically fueled cattle rustling and inter-communal conflict.
In a statement, the NPS reaffirmed its commitment to community-driven security approaches.
“The National Police Service continues to sustain these efforts aimed at removing illegal weapons from circulation through targeted operations, community engagement, and structured disarmament initiatives,” the Service said.
Authorities attributed the latest development to intensified sensitization campaigns and improved trust between residents and security agencies.
They emphasized that voluntary surrender of weapons is a positive indicator that communities are increasingly embracing peaceful coexistence.
The NPS has urged individuals still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily, warning that enforcement operations will continue against those who fail to comply.
Authorities maintain that sustainable peace in Turkana and neighboring counties will depend not only on enforcement but also on continued cooperation between communities, leaders, and security agencies.
