At least 22 people have been arrested in connection with cases of examination malpractices across three regions, as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations continue.

Education CS Migos Ogamba when he visited Mumbuni Girls in Machakos County to monitor the ongoing KCSE exams

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed the arrest noting that the cases were reported in parts of Eastern, Rift Valley and Nyanza regions.

He stated that the irregularities range from the use of electronic devices to unauthorized sharing of exam materials. The suspects include invigilators, examination center managers and candidates.

While addressing the press after witnessing the opening of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) secure container in Machakos County, Ogamba assured the public that education officials acted swiftly and accordingly to contain the situation and that the integrity of the examinations remains intact.

He also warned of disciplinary and legal consequence against anyone who will breach examination rules.

The CS further explained that the candidates who were caught cheating attempted to access answers through mobile phones and messaging apps while others were nabbed trying to sneak unauthorized materials into the examination rooms.

“In every instance, decisive actions have been taken, including the replacement of center managers, supervisors, and invigilators, as well as the arrest and prosecution of over 22 individuals by the DCI. There has also been the seizure of mobile phones and photocopied materials, and the deployment of KNEC officers for direct oversight,” Ogamba said.

The CS also echoed on the government’s plan for zero-tolerance stance on cheating during the examination period. He said that the Ministry of Education has collaborated with the law enforcement agencies to enhance surveillance in all examination centers.

He emphasized that few individuals will not be allowed to undermine the credibility of the national assessments and that the KCSE examinations must reflect honesty, merit and hard work.
